4ESO. U1. Internal Geodynamics.

Exercise:

1. The following figure represents the seismic waves velocity, in an imaginary planet. Answer the questions:

  • What is a discontinuity? How many discontinuities do you observe? Where are they?
  • Is it a homogeneus or heterogeneus internal structure? Explain your answer.
  • How many layers are there? Describe their structure and states of matter.

CONVERGENT BOUNDARY: Lithosphere is destroyed.

DIVERGENT BOUNDARY: Plates separation creates new lithosphere, when magma released in ridges, solidifies.

Remember there are also TRANSFORM  BOUNDARIES. I couldn't find a good animation of it. Plates move following the same line but opposite directions.

HOT SPOT: Hot upwelling mantle materials, or mantle plumes, that come from the mantle-core limit; they ascend to the upper mantle; generating lithosphere phenomena.

In the nutrition function, several systems take part. Digestive, respiratory, circulatory and excretory systems play an important role in it. In this unit we are going to study digestive and respiratory systems.

Living things I. Cells and review.

Biosphere refers to all the living things on Earth. From the smallest single-celled bacteria, to the huge blue whale. All of us share some characteristics, but there are also some features that make the difference.

Let's discover characteristics we share, but also the differences that exist among us. Because you are unique, right?

We are all made up of cells

Cells are the structural and functional unit of living things. This means we are built of cells (like little bricks); and it also means that all the things we do, depend on them (little machines that carry out functions). As we are not mushrooms, neither pines; there must be different cells according to the living thing in question.

Check this presentation about the different types of cells and their organelles.

What is a cell?

Depending on their genetic material, cells are classified in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Search on Google images pictures of each one. How do we find their DNA?

What do all cells have in common? Although prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are different, they share 3 elements. Compare both cell types, and try to find out what they have in common.

The Geosphere: Minerals and rocks. (1ESO)


As you may know, the Earth has four different layers: the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and the geophere. The geosphere is the largest layer, and it is made of rocks.

But, what are rocks?

Microorganisms culture.

Microorganisms are those microscopic living things invisible for us, but essential for all living beings' existence. It is true sometimes those microorganisms could be harmful for human beings. That is the reason we have an efficient immune system that prevents us from becoming ill too often.
Nonetheless, many microorganisms are innocuous or even beneficial, as bread or wine yeasts, or bacteria in our intestine.
Even you do not believe it, on your hands, in the air surrounding you, inside your mouth, there are thousands of microorganisms. Due to this practice, we are going to check all this, to show you I am not telling lies.
In this practice we are going to prove we live surrounded by microorganisms, and we hardly ever get ill because of this.

Earthworm dissection.


Because it is widely known, Lumbricus terrestris goes under a variety of common names. In Britain, it is primarily called the common earthworm or lob worm (though that name is also applied to a marine polychaete). In North America, the term nightcrawler (or vitalis) is also used. In Canada, it is also called the dew worm, or "Grandaddy Earthworm". Although this is not the most abundant earthworm, even in its native range, it is a very conspicuous and familiar earthworm species in garden and agricultural soils of the temperate zone, and is frequently seen on the surface, unlike most other earthworms. It is also used as the example earthworm for millions of biology students around the world, even in areas where the species does not exist.

Worms are critical for soil turnover and fertility. They eat dead plant material, and their burrows help aerate the soil and let water through easily. Worm casts (faeces) are rich in recycled plant nutrients that help maintain soil fertility.

This practise consists on two parts:

A) First, there is a theorical study of annelids, specifically earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris).

Animal tissues PHOTO ALBUM.

In unicellular (single-celled) organisms, the single cell performs all life functions. It functions independently.

However, multicellular (many celled) organisms have various levels of organization within them. Individual cells may perform specific functions and also work together for the good of the entire organism. The cells become dependent on one another.

Multicellular organisms may have the following 5 levels of organization ranging from simplest to most complex:

Cells --> tissues --> organs --> systems --> organism.

Some multicellular organisms do not have tissues (fungi kigndom, some algae in protoctist kingdom). Others have all levels of organization (birds class in animal kingdom).

The following album, shows different tissues humans have, each one carries out a specific function.




LEVEL 1 - Cells
Are the basic unit of structure and function in living things.
May serve a specific function within the organism
Examples- blood cells, nerve cells, bone cells, etc.

LEVEL 2 - Tissues
Made up of cells that are similar in structure and function and which work together to perform a specific activity
Examples - blood, nervous, bone, etc. Humans have 4 basic tissues: connective, epithelial, muscle, and nerve.

LEVEL 3 - Organs
Made up of tissues that work together to perform a specific activity
Examples - heart, brain, skin, etc.

LEVEL4 - Organ Systems
Groups of two or more tissues that work together to perform a specific function for the organism.
Examples - circulatory system, nervous system, skeletal system, etc.
The Human body has 11 organ systems - circulatory, digestive, endocrine, excretory (urinary), immune(lymphatic), integumentary, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, and skeletal.

LEVEL 5 - Organisms
Entire living things that can carry out all basic life processes. Meaning they can take in materials, release energy from food, release wastes, grow, respond to the environment, and reproduce.
Usually made up of organ systems, but an organism may be made up of only one cell such as bacteria or protist.
Examples - bacteria, amoeba, mushroom, sunflower, human
